HARARE – Football pundits are aware of the disgraceful exploits of Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer, his American counterpart in crime as football administrators.

The echo of corruption rot orchestrated by the duo has left the soccer fraternity in disarray. Their secretive operation to induce voting associations could probably be replicated in Harare.

Points of Light
In a bid to win the ZIFA presidential candidacy, Philip Chiyangwa is intensifying his for the top post with the launch of his manifesto where he hopes to gather all councillors – a constituent with voting powers.

The businessman and politician is vying to replace the deposed Cuthbert Dube as Zifa president in the forthcoming election. Speaking to NewsDay, his election agent said that they had invited all the 58 councillors to attend the event which will be held at a local hotel.

He also said a high-profile personality from Asia would grace the occasion.

Chiyangwa will be presenting what he calls the “The Twelve Points of Light” where he is pledging, among other things, restoration of constitutional democracy, accountability and transparency in the administration of the affairs of Zifa.

In addition he will pronounce his intention to recruitment of a crack cadre of professional and dedicated members of staff and also the expunging of the legacy debt ($6 million) through the creation of innovative national and international fund-raising initiatives.

A Wild Card
The flamboyant businessman is one of the four candidates alongside former Harare City chairman Leslie Gwindi, football legend James Takavada and former Zifa boss Trevor Carelse Juul.

Dube and his entire board’s mandate were revoked last month by the councillors, who accused them of maladministration. The councillors are invited to be “apprised of the plans he would put into action if elected.”

“We have invited all the councillors to come and hear for themselves what he will do to breathe life, restore confidence and integrity as well as to bring big smiles back into Zimbabwe’s football,” his agent said.

Chiyangwa claims he has the backing of more than 50 of the 58 councillors who will cast their ballots in the election. Years ago, the former parliamentarian was booted out of politics for selling state secretes. His campaign is seen by many as a bid to rebuild his waning political standing.

ZIFA Candidates
Takavada has also released his campaign manifesto in which he pledges to transform Zifa’s reputation and guarantee development of grassroots football. If he wins, it would be like Zambia where former player Kalusha Bwalya has transformed the football fraternity.

According to Newsday, Gwindi and Carelse Juul have not yet publicised their manifestos. Two candidates, Omega Sibanda and Lincoln Mutasa, will run for vice-president, while 10 candidates will contest for four available posts in the board.
