HARARE – Ugandan comedian Anne Kansiime has decried the general lack of female comedians in Africa. She mentioned this while on her recent comedy tour.

“Unfortunately there were no female comedians from Zimbabwe on stage. I urge female artists from this country to consider taking up comedy. Comedy is big business and they should try it. Look at me, I make a fool of myself but I get money and food on the table.”

A Better Fool
They should also make fools of themselves and make money. After all, who is a better fool between a comedian making money and you, who have paid to come and watch a fool on stage?”

She shared the stage with Harare male comedians Doc Vikela and Carl Joshua Ncube.

“I saw Carl when he came to Uganda and his act was brilliant. You know, when a foreign comedian visits, you all expect to laugh and we just laughed when Carl came to Uganda. I have seen Doc Vikela for the first time and he is exceptional. I wonder why he does not come to Uganda,” she mentioned to the Herald.

Born Kansiime Kubiryaba Anne in 1987, she began to participate in drama skits acted by the theatre group Theatre Factory, who played at the Uganda National Theatre in Kampala's central business district.

Her screen breakthrough came when Citizen TV from neighboring Kenya offered her a slot to produce, star and present a comedy show once a week. That is how she came up with the Don't Mess With Kansiime comedy show.

Queen of Comedy
As of November 2014, her YouTube channel had amassed more than 15 million views. She has appeared on BBC Focus on Africa. She has played to packed houses in Blantyre, Gaborone, Kigali, Kuala Lumpur, Lagos, Lilongwe, London, Lusaka – and recently Harare.

After her packed performance in Harare at 7Arts Theatre in Avondale she met legendary Oliver Mtukudzi at Pakare Paye Arts Centre, mentioning that she enjoys his music and had promised to visit him.

Kansiime has taken the entrainment industry by storm. Traditionally comedy, was a domain dominated by men, especially South Africans. Trevor Noah, a well-known comedian has bulldozed the American comedy circuit. – The Aloe News/The Herald
