HARARE – JA Solar Holdings, a world renowned manufacturer of solar power products will make inroads into Zimbabwe by supplying solar components worth $179 million for the construction of 100MW solar farm in Zimbabwe to commence in 2016.

This contract is one of the three intended farms to be built in the country to augment the existing electricity generating capacity mainly supplied by Kariba dam, which has dwindled due to erratic rainfall pattern prevailing in the country.

The total value of the projects is estimated at $544 million. Harvesting the sun to produce electricity has been seen as an alternative to the dwindling power source within Harare which has fallen to 900MW.

The peak need is estimated at 2 200MW, resulting in a blanket load shedding engulfing the country.

"Winning the contract to supply PV modules to the Zimbabwe project not only provides higher-quality solar products for markets across the globe, as we continue to pursue the highest quality in our products in order to best serve our customers," said the company.

Number 17 Metallurgical China Corporation was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction tender will source the solar modules from JA Solar.

With a more hours of sunlight supply especially during the summer periods, Zimbabwe was lagging behind in installing alternative power generation to match the high demand due to expansion in residential and industrial areas.

At completion, the three projects are projected to provide an additional 900MW to the grid. – The Aloe News/The Herald
