Harare - Organisers of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) have launched the HIFA 2016 programme which will be starting from April to December.

The usual six day Hifa event is expected to return next year. Addressing a press conference in the capital yesterday, Hifa director Maria Wilson said it was not correct to say there will be no Hifa this year saying this year the festival is coming in a different form.

“There will be no six-day event but Hifa is happening this time in a different way, a lot of things will be happening starting from April 29 when we are going to have the first event which will feature Cabs classical musical celebration, where two groups, the Coda Africa and Urban Strings will be performing.

“The six-day festival will return in 2017,” she said.

She also highlighted that this year’s events, will include a theatre season, Parkade party, Rugby exhibition match, car racing demonstration with many other events being hosted in different venues.

“The first Cabs classical music celebration will take place at St Georges College, the Parkade Party will be happening at the Parkade along Julius Nyerere with a musical weekend taking place at Glamis Arena, among other events,” she said.

Speaking at the same occasion, Hifa spokesperson Tafadzwa Simba added that they have decided to add some new activities that were not traditionally associated with the festival to cater for different people.

“Sport works in tandem with arts since both work for the same thing, that of bringing people together for celebration and having fun hence the need to introduce some sporting activities in this year’s edition.

“There is going to be rugby exhibition match in July then formula one racing demonstration in September for sport lovers”, he said. He added that there will be a Fashion, Hair and Beauty show in November with an anti-poaching and environmental conservation conference wrapping up the year in December. - The Herald
