These daredevils youngsters risk death every day as they ride on top of trains between Sebokeng kasi and Vereeniging in the Vaal, ducking power lines carrying thousands of volts of electricity.

When the SunTeam visited Houtkop Station this week, several surfers were on the first few carriages of the train coming from Residensia.
Dicing With Death

They whistled, laughed and waved at Daily Sun’s photographer. Some passengers were sticking their heads out of the carriages to watch the action.

Although train surfers can be entertaining, there have been many deaths in recent years. However, Metrorail spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng said train surfing is declining.

“We are aware that some train surfers are still active and move from one station to another. This used to be a massive problem but the number of people doing it has decreased and the situation has improved,” she said.

“We have also recently started asking rehabilitated train surfers to educate those still doing it – they know and listen to each other.
Free Ride To Work

“We have discovered that some of the train surfers are young men who use drugs.” Mofokeng said Metrorail has educational programmes to discourage surfing and create awareness around the risks, which include death.

“Some of the train surfers are pupils, so we take our safety campaign to schools in the residential areas where our trains operate,” she said.

Mofokeng added that the risk of death was very real for surfers. “Unfortunately they die if they touch a power line,” she said. - Daily Sun
