Engcobo residents, the SA Council of Churches and ANC members marched for the Angel’s Ministry Church to be closed down.

They started their peaceful march at the Eastern Cape town’s sports grounds and then went on to the Engcobo Magistrates Court to hand over their petition.

The petition stated that although the protesters recognised the church’s rights, its teachings were morally wrong. The marchers accused the church of depriving kids of their right to education and social services.

Addressing the crowd, Zamindawo Gqira of the council of churches said they didn’t recognise Angel’s Ministry as a church. He said the church was impacting negatively on society. The church has admitted that it doesn’t encourage education.

Engcobo mayor Lamla Jiyose said they had nothing against the church members’ choice of religion, but had to act as concerns were raised. The petition was accepted by regional justice department head Vuyani Mguqulwa, who was expected to respond within seven days.

Mguqulwa said his department would look at the petition and its allegations and see which laws had been broken by the church.

Angel’s Ministry was in the spotlight last month when the social development department removed 18 kids from the church. Although the kids were properly looked after, they did not attend school.

They were put in the care of social workers. When the SunTeam visited the church in Nyanga Village after the march, the Mancoba brothers, who lead the church, said they had heard about the march.

“We’ve got nothing to hide. This is a normal church and has been around for many years,” said Xolisa Mancoba. - Daily Sun
