Barbaric Rituals: Zulu King Slams Albino Killings

Durban - Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini has lashed out at traditional healers who use body parts from albinos.

He also vowed to go the extra mile to ensure albinos feel safe in KwaZulu-Natal. “Traditional healing is part of our culture as the Zulu nation and we believe it is a gift from our late forefathers,” said the king.

“It has forever been part of the Zulu nation’s culture. I find it an insult to our culture that some people hunt albinos as if they are animals. Our forefathers never killed anyone for rituals.”

Speaking at the Ondini Cultural Museum near Ulundi on Friday afternoon, the king said he would like to have a record of all albinos to make it easier to look for them if they suddenly disappeared. He was addressing hundreds of people attending the launch of a campaign to raise awareness about attacks against albinos and discrimination against them.

The campaign was started by the king in partnership with the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, the Albinism Society of South Africa and the KZN provincial government.

The king said the campaign would be taken to other provinces to educate people to accept albinos in their communities. Chairwoman of the Albino Society, Nomasonto Mazibuko, advised people to educate themselves and to stay away from bogus healers.

Among the dignitaries who spoke at the event was IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi. The campaign was established following the brutal murder of Thandazile Mpunzi (20) in Manguzi last year. Thandazile, who was an albino, disappeared and was later found murdered at a local pastor’s house.

Friday’s event was rounded off with performances by Amabutho and albino gospel artist Sgwili Zuma. - Daily Sun
