Patricia Sekgobela wants answers after her mum went missing from hospital last month and her body was found mutilated the next day.

Maria Mokone (74) was admitted to Kgapane Hospital near Modjadjiskloof, Limpopo, on 7 May for high blood pressure. According to Patricia, her mum was healthy the last time she saw her.

Patricia (44), who lives in Braamfisher, Soweto, told Daily Sun: “When I went to visit her the day after she was admitted, the nurses told me she had just walked out of the building.

“Staff members went out searching but there was no trace of her.” Patricia called the police but they couldn’t find Maria either and they called off the search at about 11pm.

“At about 5am the next morning they phoned saying they had found my mum. When I arrived at the hospital they told me she had frozen to death,” said Patricia.

She insisted on seeing her mum’s body but allegedly the nurses told her she couldn’t. “I forced my way through and when I saw her I got the shock of my life. Her kidneys were missing and ants were coming out of her mouth.

“The left and right sides of her stomach were cut open and she had a long cut from her throat to the stomach area,” said Patricia.

Limpopo Health Department spokesman Derick Kganyago said they were aware of the incident.

“The issue was brought to us and is being investigated internally. We are trying to determine if the incident was the result of a security breach or not,” said Kganyago.
