More than a thousand Zimbabweans plus 200 human rights lawyers converged at the Harare magistrates’ court to show solidarity with #ThisFlag campaigner Pastor Evan Mawarire who is facing charges of inciting violence - and labelled a thief, according to the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

Mawarire‚ 39‚ was arrested on Tuesday and charged under the Criminal Law Act‚ for 'incitement to commit public violence' after calling for a public stay away on July 13. 

He also called for and end to rampant corruption plus police brutality. Police have since taken Mawarire back to Harare Central police station, apparently for further detention.

#Tajamuka pressure group leader Promise Mkwananzi made an address, reiterating they were not intending to cause any violence in the presence of dozens of police details, armed with baton sticks. 

A search and seizure warrant issued by the Justice of Peace has said Mawarire is “believed to be in possession of a stolen police helmet‚ button stick and other subversive material which he used to incite public violence on 6 July 2016...,” read the warrant.

The search warrant allows the police to investigate all occupants and items at the pastor’s Avondale house in Harare‚ “day or night”.

According to reports‚ the law under which the bespectacled pastor has been detained carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years. And the Zimbabwean law says he must appear in court within 48 hours. - tinzwei.com/Online Sources
