Two men were caught allegedly trying to sell a human head at Warwick Junction in Durban, KZN cops said today.

The head had been burned beyond recognition, Captain Nqobile Gwala said.

The pair, aged 20 and 24, allegedly tried to sell the head to informal traders yesterday. The junction is a popular area for traditional healers selling traditional medicine.

“A case of possession of human tissues is being investigated by Durban Central SAPS. They will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court soon,” Gwala said.

Cases of human parts trade have been rampart in South Africa. In South Africa, the sale of human body parts is an issue often shrouded in secrecy.

It is a country where cultural practices still hold sway and discussing them openly is something even the media finds difficult.

There has long been a reluctance to investigate "concoction murders" - the killing of people for their body parts - or to investigate those who traffic or use human body parts in traditional medicine for its so-called supernatural qualities.
