Harare – Politics, tribalism and confusion have taken centre stage within the Zimbabwe sporting arena.

Once regarded as a uniting entity, sports have been invaded by ethnic groups to forward their various agendas.

#ThisFlag hype – a movement started by exiled Pastor Evan Mawarire to wear the national flag.

In Bulawayo they exhibited their nature by invaded the cricket pitch in a match between Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

At the dawn of the 36th over, crowds rose and sang the national anthem while waving the national flag – a sign of protest.

“I am in complete support of the protest because of the situation in the country,” Mandla Dungeni told AFP.

The feat was replayed in Bulawayo recently – this time during a soccer match pitting Dynamos and Highlanders.

And one fanatic waved a placard depicting Shona people as ‘Dogs and Baboons.’ His hate speech is contrary that Highlanders has Shona players – including the scorer, Ralph Matema.

His show of defiance reflects the level of intolerance within the Zimbabwean ethnic groups. Shona and Ndebele people have been divided since Matabeleland disturbances – Gukurahundi – that rocked the area in the 80s.

Since then, many gatherings have been founded on that basis – and any attempt to dismiss this problem?

Seven years ago, Dynamos supporter Stanford Nhau, popularly known as Taribo West, met his fate in Bulawayo.

Supporters allege that Taribo died after succumbing to injuries he suffered from the attacks by rival fans in a match pitting Highlanders and Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium.

Highlanders flatly dispute the claims.

Taribo’s death, the Dynamos supporters claim, has cast a bad spell on Highlanders which would only be wiped out if Bosso pay “damages”.

Makhosini Hlongwane was confused by the brazen attacks.

“The Minister of Sport and Recreation is shocked and alarmed by the use of derogatory, pejorative, dehumanising, and inflammatory language by (a) Highlanders fan during that club’s match against Dynamos at Barbourfields on Sunday.” - tinzwei.com/Online Sources
