The resort town of Kariba felt the tremors in 2014 – with a 4,6 magnitude – lasting 15 seconds – raising fears about the safety of the ageing Kariba dam wall.

Sam Mawawo shared a personal experience.

“I was awakened by the rattling pots, pans and plates in the house which lasted for some seconds, but it was frightening,” he said.

Traditionalists believe there is a link with the actions and rituals conducted. The country is prone to such sudden movements.

“Mozambique and surrounding areas in Manicaland are within the line of weakness of the Great East African Rift System, which extends all the way from the Red Sea in the north to Manicaland and into Mozambique in the south.”

Zimbabwe is affected sue to plate tectonics and mining activities – the effects have been felt across the country.
