Doctors are assessing a baby born with four legs in western Mozambique to see if the child can be operated upon, a report says, while in January 2014, a baby was born with four legs (two of them joined) in rural Mhondoro, central Zimbabwe.

The baby, whose sex was not given, has just been born in Manica Province, according to the Magazine Independente.

"The mother had a normal birth and was not suspicious of anything during the gestation period," said the weekly, which is published in Portuguese.

A baby with three legs was also born in the province this month, said the weekly. Online reports suggested that the baby with three legs had died.

Birth abnormalities like this are occasionally reported in the region, where prenatal scans are not always available.

The official Herald said then that doctors in Harare had told the child's parents that their baby may have been a twin at conception.

In Rural Zimbabwe, a child with multiple human body parts was born in 2014. Grace Zimbowa was seemingly shocked and believes a miracle has kept her child alive.

The child had two hearts, three legs and four feet, two male organs and had intestines protruding from behind.

“This is known as congenital malformation or abnormalities and it can happen to children who were supposed to be born as twins but the genes are disturbed and the babies are not separated and are born on one of the babies’ body. This usually happens during the initial stages of pregnancy,” said an expert.

In 2011 a child was born at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital with two faces, four hands and four legs. The child was born premature and died soon after being delivered. - tinzwei.com/Online Sources
