Veteran midfielder Teko Modise was disappointed Mamelodi Sundowns could not retain their league title but is pleased they can now focus entirely on defending their CAF Champions League crown.

Sundowns relinquished league honours to Bidvest Wits in 2016/17, finishing second on the table after a 2-2 draw with relegated Highlands Park in Tembisa on Saturday.

Pitso Mosimane's men, who also lost the MTN8 final to Wits, next host Esperance in a Champions League tie at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night (20h00).

The Brazilians beat AS Vita 3-1 in DR Congo last week, having been held to a goalless draw by Ethiopia's St George in their Group C opener in Tshwane.

Modise told his website: “Finally the season is over and it was a good run. It may not have finished the way that we wanted it to end but nonetheless we finished second. This will at least slow down the pace of the games that we have to play. Now we can focus on the CAF Champions League games and have time prepare properly.”

The 34-year-old added: “Yes, it would have been great to lift the title but you cannot win everything. The past season was a historical one for the team and us as players individually. So if we just linger on the disappointment of not lifting the PSL title we would not be doing ourselves justice. We had a great season.” - Kick Off
