Harare – The journalism fraternity has been plunged into deep mourning after the death of Sharon Muguwu aka Shaez. She was 28.
Muguwu a staff writer within the Daily News newsroom passed on after a prolonged battle with leukemia at a Harare Hospital.Derick Matsengarwodzi
A dedicated and a rare breed of journalist, Muguwu was a product of the School of Mass Communication at the Harare Polytechnic.
Announcing her death Gift Phiri, the news editor at Daily News paid tribute to the reporter, describing her as a jovial character.
“It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing away of our lovely colleague, Sharon. We at the Daily News who have known her closely are still trying to come to terms with this sad, tragic news,” said Phiri in his Facebook tribute.
During her stint in the local media community, Sharon had become an influence to her colleagues.
“We have known Sharon for many years and are devastated to learn of her passing. She was a strong and jovial woman, always very focused and determined. She was a great person, full of life, she was instrumental in our entertainment desk, and she always did her work with diligence,” added Phiri.
The news of Sharon’s death devastated the daily’s newsroom said Phiri, adding, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family in this very difficult time. We have lost a great champion, a wonderful person, and a dear friend.”
Meanwhile, Phiri’s post generated various tributes from the journalism community.
“It is with utter sadness that Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (Zinef) has learnt of the passing on of Daily News journalist Sharon Muguwu. MHSRIP,” said former NewsDay editor, Njabulo Ncube.

“Am saddened by the passing on of one of Zimbabwe's finest entertainment journalists, u fought a good fight Sharon, may your soul rest in eternal peace, u were one of my favourite and closest reporters, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe would have not been what it is today without u ......my sincere condolences ...”
“So sorry to all her workmates. We have known her to be a person who had her job at art. The arts industry has lost a heroin. May her soul rest in peace,” said singer Alexio Kawara.
Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe (ANZ) Chairman Professor Norman Nyazema issued a bereavement statement.
“Praise can be cheap, particularly when someone has passed on, but Sharon was without doubt one of the most agreeable, amiable and committed colleague we have had at ANZ.”
Mourners are gathered at the family home in Southlands, Harare.
