Johannesburg - This drama-filled game between Kaizer Chiefs and Bidvest Wits had everything: 10 yellow cards and one red card as things boiled over.
Soon, tempers flared during the Absa Premiership game at the FNB Stadium, and Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela had to be restrained from Wits official as things turned nasty at the end of their 1-1 draw.
In trying to clam things down afterwards the Clever Boys head coach Gavin Hunt praised Komphela, saying he was like a honey badger, a fearless animal that takes everything in its stride.
Hunt praised his counterpart for the manner in which he acted after their drama-filled game, which seemed all but in the bag for Chiefs after Siphiwe Tshabalala scored early in the second half.
But Amakhosi failed to manage the game against the 10-man Wits after Nazeer Allie was sent off at the end of the first half. Clever Boys striker Amr Gamal snatched the equaliser deep into added time.
Komphela was not pleased with how things ended but was furious with a Wits official in particular, insisting this was not the first time he has had words with the same official.
He said he laid a complaint against the same individual with footballing authorities when Wits lifted the Premiership trophy at the same venue on the last day of last season, but they did nothing about it. A fed-up Komphela said he was tired of being disrespected by this individual.
He said: “There are people around the game who just like to spoil things. As I was trying to greet the referee there was an uproar with someone saying ‘Steve, you did this and that’ – and I don’t take kindly to such words. I complained to Hunt. I don’t need that disrespect.”
Hunt jumped in to add that people who have nothing to do with the game should stay out of it: “Steve, you know what, you are a honey badger. These people are imposters. You have a big enough heart to tolerate these things.”
Amakhosi visit Maritzburg United next at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm). Komphela admitted that they gave it away against Wits but he is hoping that they will learn from this, adding, “Maritzburg are a difficult team but we will be ready.” - Daily Sun
