Mnangagwa Visits Tsvangirai: Ubuntu or PR Stunt?

Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s courtesy visit to the country's ailing main opposition leader has torched a social media storm – with some questioning the timing – while others have appreciated the move, urging him to retire from active politics.

Mnangagwa made the stopover at Morgan Tsvangirai’s Highlands home in Harare, accompanied by his deputy – Retired General Constantino Chivengwa.

Meanwhile, the president has rebuffed any moves to form a coalition government.

“Currently there is no need,” Mnangagwa said about the possibility of forming a coalition with Tsvangirai’s MDC.

Mnangagwa has been preaching peace and reconciliation on every platform, after divisions has rocked the nation – particularly on political lines.

Ironically, Chiwenga and Mnangagwa have been accused of denying Tsvangirai a chance to rule the country after he allegedly won elections – which were later turned in Zanu-PF’s favour.

However, Tsvangirai accepted the outcome, participating in a transitional government as Prime Minister and attending Mnangagwa’s inauguration in 2017.

The MDC leader has been battling colon cancer – with some media reports proposing he was advanced cash by the ousted former Zimbabwe President – Robert Mugabe to access chemotherapy treatment in South Africa.

Mnangagwa’s call sent social media into haywire.

“It’s time Ba Edwin vazorora havo. He ran his race, let him pass baton. History will record him as a former Trade Unionist who won elections 2X but wasn’t allowed 2 rule. Wish his family can persuade him 2 see light. The government can help by giving his pension, he needs security,” noted Gomo Dubi, a respected but anonymous twitter pundit.

Clever Mudadi commented that Tsvangirai needs to rest.

“Umm guys mapics andawona atsvangson akagara pasofa ana ED na chiwenga nachamisa, arwara mrume uyu ngaachisiya munhu anofunga haangamboisi vote yake pamunhu akadai umm.”

Conrad Mwanawashe questioned the motive saying, “Images from President Mnangagwa's arrival at Morgan Tsvangirai visit. Mature politics or PR?”

“I applaud President Mnangagwa's kind gesture of visiting Morgan Tsvangirai. This is our spirit of ubuntu. Very sad to see Morgan so ill, though,” said Trudy Stevenson.

Respected scribe, Mduduzi Mathuthu believes the opposition is finished.

"With that brief visit, and a flash of the cameras, Mnangagwa has just staged a coup in the main opposition. These images of an emaciated Tsvangirai have just perished talk of 'Save Chete Chete in 2018'. Reality is MDC now cannot avoid confronting its succession quagmire," he opined.
