Johannesburg - “Work in progress. There’s a bright future for him ahead. It depends obviously on the progress. We still give him support systems at the moment, we are still giving him tools to succeed,” these are the words of Bobby Motaung regarding coach Steve Komphela's future at Chiefs.
And he believes there is a bright future ahead for coach Komphela, saying talks over a new contract are “a work in progress”.
Komphela’s three-year deal with Amakhosi expires at the end of the season, leaving him with just a few months to get his first piece of silverware as coach of the Soweto giants.
Komphela has come under fire many a time for the team’s failure to win any trophies since he took over from Stuart Baxter, who won four major titles in his three seasons at Naturena.
Having already lost out on winning the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout in the first half of the season, Komphela has the Absa Premiership and Nedbank Cup titles to compete for before the season closes in May.
This season Komphela has introduced more youngsters from development into the senior team, giving opportunities to Wiseman Meyiwa, Siyabonga Ngezana and Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya. This, according to Motaung, was part of the plans they had when Komphela joined Amakhosi.
“The only problem with such contracts, especially with a guy like Steve, is people look at trophies. But if you look at the plans we had with him when he started, they are being implemented in terms of development, the Chiefs culture and philosophy. It’s bearing fruit in a little way, but obviously that’s a long-term vision.”
He continued: “People judge you by results, which is a bit of a challenge at the moment. But for now, we are supporting Steve and we are giving him the tools he requires in terms of achieving the goals. So the contract issue is a work in progress.”
Motaung says despite losing out on two major trophies so far this season, there's still the league title to fight for, the most coveted prize in South African football.
“We hope that we will have a better year. We lost out in the MTN8 and Telkom, but unfortunately it's football and the journey still goes on. There's still the league to fight for,” he said. - KickOff
