Amakhosi Skipper: Khune is the Best Even when Sick

Johannesburg - Despite having a stomach bug just before the match - Itumeleng Khune - the Amakhosi skipper gave an outstanding performance during the Nedbank Cup last 32 encounter against Golden Arrows.

His was a match-winning performance - and in the 23 matches Khune has played in all competitions this season, he has conceded 11 times and has kept 13 clean sheets.

In addition, Chiefs have the best defence in the league with 12 goals conceded and key to that has been the form of the Bafana Bafana shot stopper. He’s surely a favourite to win the goalkeeper of the season award and is a top candidate for the big one as well.

The Bafana Bafana shot-stopper was called on to pull of a number of great saves to keep his side in control of proceedings, much to the delight of his coach, who was full of praise forhis skipper.

“If you have a top quality keeper at the back, you have confidence to defend. Football is not a game where you would be perfectly correct throughout 90 minutes but, when you commit that error, the one at the back helps you and keeps you in the game,” said coach Steve Komphela.

“It’s tops to see Khune making those kinds of saves, and he does that consistently. Funny enough, in the dressing he said to me, ‘Mokoetlisi [coach], you know, I think I must always have this running tummy because every time I have it I get man of the match’.

Komphela went down memory lane during the Bafana era.

“He reminded me even of matches with Bafana Bafana. He played today and had a bit of an upset stomach, so I said to him, ‘My man, I’m going to pray that you stay like that in matches so that you can pull man of the match’.

“It’s good that an athlete commits to the cause, plays very well, saves and makes their team win, when they are still not on top of their physical condition, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Komphela recalled.
