Draw Specialists: Lack of Goals Robbed Chiefs of Silverware

Johannesburg - Amakhosi have scored 20 goals in 24 matches this season, while they played to 12 draws, eight of which have ended goalless.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says the team’s poor record in front of goal has hindered their progress this season.

Chiefs had a few strikers on trial in the first half of the season, but ended up bringing in Leonardo Castro from Mamelodi Sundowns in the January transfer.

Castro has contributed three goals at the club, but Amakhosi in need of the type of quality they had in strikers of the past, such as Fani Madida, Siyabonga Nomvethe, Collins Mbesuma and Knowledge Musona.
Worried Coach

Their eighth goalless draw was registered in Saturday’s Absa Premiership match against AmaZulu at FNB Stadium, which all but confirmed that Amakhosi will not be lifting the title under Steve Komphela for a third consecutive season.

Chiefs only have the Nedbank Cup to battle for this season and not winning it will probably see the end of Komphela’s reign at Naturena coming to a bitter end. They are seven points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns with six games to play.

“Out of the 12 draws eight finished in nil-nil. That means that if we scored once, we would have won. We should have won many of these games as we created many chances. Our lack of goals has hindered our progress,” the former Free State Stars coach told the Amakhosi website.

Komphela will have an opportunity to work on finishing throughout the international break, but it could prove to be a little too late in the campaign for the coach to get his strikers to bang in the goals to inspire the team to success.

Chiefs will play Baroka FC after the international break in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals. - KickOff
