Election Record: 121 Parties for Zim's 2018 Elections

Harare - During the 1994 South African general elections, 19 political parties emerged to contest the first ever democratic elections - and among those vying for seats in parliament were: the Women's Rights Peace Party, Ximoko Progressive Party, Keep it Straight and Simple and the Soccer party.

And now, the 2018 plebiscite in Zimbabwe will attract the highest number of contesting parties - 121 to be precise, according to the elections governing body.

However, voters remain skeptical as to how they will navigate the ballot papers, given the influx of political parties hoping to clinch the highest prize.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), has however said the parties will have to go through vetting, with a punitive $1 000 to be paid by any prospective party done by the nomination court after the proclamation by the president.

“Parties register in their numbers usually because of the mistaken impression that they will be paid money for participating, but there is a process of vetting serious parties and candidates at the nomination court.

“The vetting includes the payment of $1 000 for aspiring presidential candidates and security clearance as convicted persons,” said ZEC chairperson Justice Chigumba.

An amendment to the Electoral Act will make it mandatory for candidate not to pull out, in order to avoid logistical challenges.

“We are hoping the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs will take on board our proposed amendments to avert the logistical nightmare and the use of tax payers’ money to reprint ballots once a candidate elects to opt out on the 11th hour,” added the ZEC Chair.

Meanwhile ZEC will operate with a $53 millon shortfall after their request from Treasury of $148 million was slashed to only $95 million. - Online Sources
