Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs are standing on the brink of falling down to their lowest scoring season since the launch of the NSL way back in 1985.
Such has been the mediocrity of the Chiefs frontline that they have the third worst attack in the league, having scored a mere 21 goals in 26 league games played to date.Chiefs have failed to score in 10 of those matches and have scored just one goal in another 11 matches. It is only in five fixtures that they have managed to score twice.
The disappointing return from Chiefs attackers means they haven’t scored more than two goals in a league match all season. None of their players has reached five league goals this season with their top scorer in the league Ryan Moon standing on four goals.
Goals have really been a scarce commodity for Chiefs with just six players (Moon 4, Siphiwe Tshabalala 3, Dumisani Zuma 2, Gustavo Paez 2, Leonardo Castro 2 and Bernard Parker 2) having scored more than one league goal this season.

Truth be told their attack has been blunt with clubs such as AmaZulu, Polokwane City, Golden Arrows, Baroka and Chippa United all doing better than Chiefs in terms of goal scoring, raising questions about Steve Komphela’s tactics along with the quality of their frontline.
Amakhosi must now score 11 goals in the last four matches to at least match 32 goals (2007/08), which currently stands as their lowest ever goals return in a season since 1985. That year (07/08) Chiefs finished sixth with Mabhuti Khenyeza carrying much of the load on his shoulders with eight goals.
This season the relegation-threatened pair of Platinum Stars (17) and SuperSport United (20) have scored less than Amakhosi. What has helped Chiefs’ situation is the fact that they have the joint-best defence in the league (18 goals conceded) along with Maritzburg.
Meanwhile, Komphela is now facing the prospect of his worst league campaign of the three years that he has been in charge at Kaizer Chiefs. Komphela reached 46 points in his first season in charge and will now have to pick up at least seven out of the 12 remaining points to avoid further soiling the Chiefs name.
Chiefs have 39 points at the moment and their remaining fixture list has a desperate Platinum Stars coming to FNB Stadium on Saturday night. They will afterwards travel to Golden Arrows and then host Maritzburg United before wrapping up the campaign with a visit to Ajax Cape Town. - KickOff
