Johannesburg - Now that Steve Komphela's fate as Kaizer Chiefs coach has been sealed, the media scrutinise his three-year spell and point out how he actually failed to deliver, even a single silverware.
Komphela's spell commenced with a seven-game unbeaten run, but thing turned upside down. And in the Absa Premiership, he averaged 1.59 points per game. He also never managed to beat Orlando Pirates in a Soweto Derby in open play.
Komphela resigned as head of the Glamour Boys on Saturday night following a 2-0 defeat to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup and the disgraceful scenes of hooliganism that followed.
The 50-year-old was expected to see out his contract at the club before leaving ahead of the new campaign, however, the violence at Moses Mabhida Stadium seemed to force both his, and the club’s, hand in the matter.
Now, with three games left to play this season, the club has to come to terms with the fact that – for the first time in their history – they will complete three full seasons without lifting a single piece of silverware.
The defeat to Ea Lla Koto was Komphela’s 112th game with Chiefs since taking charge of his first (a 5-3 win over Maritzburg United) in August 2015. It was his 27th loss at the club.
In total, Komphela won 42% of all his games (47 of 112), drawing 38, a record that is substantially worse than his predecessor, Stuart Baxter, who left with a 60% win ratio and only lost 19 games.
With fans having criticised his defensive approach, it will come as no surprise that the club averaged just 1.3 goals per game during his tenure, scoring 148 in his 112 matches. They also conceded – on average – just over one goal per game (116 in 112) throughout the course of his spell.
