Harare - Former army commander Perrance Shiri has equated his ousted boss Robert Mugabe with Africa’s notorious late dictators, Mobutu Sese Seko and Jean Bédel Bokassa of the Central African Republic.
The comparison stems from their failed attempts to install their respective wives and mistresses as successors, a feat Mugabe tried to achieve as he sought to elevate Grace Mugabe, before he was thwarted by the army in November, 2017.
“Even dictators like Mobutu of Zaire and Bokasa failed in their endeavours to elevate their wives to power, but Zimbabwe nearly succeeded if it was not for our guest speaker, VP Retired General Constantino Chiwenga,” he said during a farmers field day in Chakari.
“So our guest of honour said no, we can’t have such a situation because it was against the values of the liberation struggle.”

Chiwenga is celebrated for leading the now famous Operation Restore Legacy last November, afterwards, he was installed as the country's vice president.
Towards the end of Mugabe's reign last year, Grace embarked on a countrywide campaign lambasting Mnangagwa and accusing him of plotting to unseat her husband.
"VP Chiwenga is not power hungry because he could have assumed power after former President was removed, but as a professional soldier, he handed over power to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who asked VP Chiwenga to stay as his deputy," Shiri said.
