Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper coach Brian Baloyi has castigated the standard of football displayed in the PSL this past season.
Mamelodi Sundowns outfit virtually cruise to the Absa Premiership title with just 60 points, Baloyi believes criticism is warranted based on the log table.
Up until the final day, teams were both scrambling for top eight positions while also trying to avoid the dreaded drop-zone at the bottom end of the log.
The former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper has since called on sharper criticism in order for teams and players to step up and improve going forward.
“I believe this past season was one of the most interesting seasons I’ve ever seen, but I know sometimes we are sceptical and afraid to criticise,” Baloyi tells KickOff.com.
“When we criticise, people sometimes look at us and say, ‘Now why is he criticising?’ But I think the most important thing that builds characters and sports people is criticism.
“And, if we are honest, I think the PSL and clubs themselves – including coaches, when you talk to them on the side – acknowledge and accept that this was one of the poorest PSL seasons.”
‘Spider’ says The Brazilians were virtually handed the championship on a silver platter, while the fact that the highest goal scorers in the league managed a meagre 11 goals also proves the dipping standards.
“I mean, up until the last two games, teams were still able to win their games after being in danger of relegation and move all the way into the top eight,” he adds.
“And when you look at Sundowns, they were busy on the continent and I think the league was basically just given to them. They were just managing their games and ended up winning the league.
“I mean, it’s clear – you can see how many goals the top goal scorers are on, so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to really see that the only way we’ll grow is if we criticise and look for solutions.
“We can’t say it’s okay and say this was a great season, when we have a top goal scorer sitting on 11 goals after 30 games. We have to look in the mirror and ask what it is that we need to do to improve our football. Our national team can only benefit from that.”
