Brilliant Khuzwayo: Keeper to Challenge Khune for Bafana Jersey

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo is also looking to contest with Itumeleng Khune for the No.1 spot at Bafana Bafana and facing Kaizer Chiefs captain in the Soweto Derby.

The 28-year-old player, who won two PSL titles with Amakhosi, is looking to help Bucs end their four-year trophy drought.

“I have a lot to offer. I’ve got too much confidence in myself, with too much respect, of course. You’ve got to have an ego as a player. There’s the iPhone and the Samsung. If people don’t like the first one, they go for the other,” he said.

“But let’s see how the season goes. Let’s see who ends the season as the number one keeper for Bafana Bafana,” he added.

The lanky shot-stopper played second fiddle to Khune during his six-year spell with Amakhosi, and he decided to leave the Soweto giants in search of regular game time at the end of last season.
Khuswayo to Challenge Khune

“We’re very close. We always talk, even advice one another. It was a healthy competition between two goalkeepers. We’ll meet in the Derby,” Khuzwayo said told Daily Sun.

Khune is the most capped goalkeeper since Bafana's readmission in 1992. He has won 87 caps, while Khuzwayo only has three appearances under his belt for the national team.

“I had to sit down with my family and with those I regard as my support system. Obviously, I spent a long time at Chiefs. But if you see that your tree is not growing on a particular soil, you need to find a new soil where it can grow bigger,” he explained.

“The main priority is Orlando Pirates. I’m not looking at other things. I’m focused on helping the team do well, win trophies. Given a chance, I’ll grab it with both hands,” he said.

“Anything that goes on outside of that is none of my business. I’m a professional footballer and I must behave professionally. As I said, let’s see how the season goes,” he concluded.

Pirates will take on Highlands Park in their first league game of the 2018/19 season on Saturday, August 4 at the Orlando Stadium.
