Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande believes Giovanni Solinas will induce a philosophy of discipline, balance and dispatching exciting type of football like before.

“His team always had discipline, balance and they played exciting football. As you can see, we have that quality of knocking the ball around and I think he has that philosophy. I think [his appointment] is good for the team, it’s good for the supporters and good for everyone.”

The Italian tactician built up a profile during his first spell at Free State Stars in 2015/16, when he lead the club to 12th place and a Nedbank Cup semi-final spot.

The Italian tactician guided the side to 12th on the Absa Premiership standings, while also leading them to the Nedbank Cup semi-finals in his six months during the 2015/16 season.

He later returned to the club in September 2016, replacing Denis Lavagne who was sacked after just three matches in charge, and departed once again in January 2017.

Solinas then went on to coach Saudi Arabian outfit Al Faisaly – for which Tendai Ndoro previously played – between February and June last year. He now returns to South Africa 18 months later, ending speculation of who would replace the departed Steve Komphela at The Glamour Boys.

The former ES Setif coach was also previously linked to Orlando Pirates, upon his second departure from Stars last year, but the club opted instead for incumbent mentor Milutin Sredojevic.

Solinas has beaten reported candidates such as Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter, current Stars coach Luc Eymael and Township Rollers mentor Nikola Kavazovic to the position.

Meanwhile, Chiefs are set to feature in their first pre-season outing when they kick off the annual Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup on Saturday.
