Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has blamed the opposition MDC Alliance for the deaths of three civilians shot by soldiers as riots broke in the CBD, following the slow release of recent elections.

Appearing on state media, Mnangagwa said the opposition is solely responsible for the wanton destruction of property and the law would take its due course.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) would like to confirm the death of three people during the demonstrations. The deceased have not been identified and are being kept at Parirenyatwa hospital,” the police said.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa had said they would not accept any election result except an outright victory for his party.

Meanwhile, police are keen to quiz Tendai Biti, the MDC Alliance leader for allegedly instigating violence that rocked the CBD.

The ZRP Commissioner General Godwin Matanga has invoked the Public Order and Security Act (Chapter 11.17) & approached the Min of Home Affairs to request for assistance of defence forces for suppression of the commotion and disturbances in Harare CBD.

Earlier, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former Liberian president and head of the observer mission of the International Republican Institute and the National Democratic Institute warns that “the more the presidential vote is delayed, the more it calls into question the population’s confidence in the election process.”

The election environment has been simmering since the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has been labeled an extension of the ruling party by the MDC Alliance, whose demands were thwarted by the commission.
