Harare - Zimbabwe is a country of ambiguities.

While the country is facing a severe foreign currency shortage, former President Robert Mugabe lost US$150 000 to his employees.

The workers, some of them relatives, came across the money while they were doing household chores and decided to take it for themselves.

According to reports, the money was in a briefcase at Mugabe’s rural home in Zvimba and was allegedly stolen between December 1 last year and January 5 this year.

But many were perplexed why he would stash such huge amounts into his rural home.

Robert Mugabe has Been a Victim of Theft Recently

The suspected thieves, Constancia Mugabe (50), Johanne Mapurisa (50) and Saymore Nhetekwa (47), were granted $2000 bail each after they appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Felix Mawadze yesterday facing theft charges.

They will be back on trial on the 24th of January.

According to the prosecution, the three connived with Andrew Mahumbe, who is still at large, to steal a briefcase containing US$150 000 in cash as they were cleaning the house.

This was made easy by the fact that Constancia Mugabe kept the keys to the house and had unlimited access to all its rooms.

Upon Investigations, the police realised that the three had accumulated unexplained wealth, which included cars, a residential stand and livestock in a very short space of time, leading to their arrest.

Mugabe was reportedly getting his salary in cash during his tenure. His family has been victims of burglary recently, ranging from household property to electrical gadgets.
