Nine years after climbing on the showbiz global stage, Nigerian singer Burna Boy has won a Grammy Award. 

But he has been in the reckoning for the honour, when he accumulated other previous accolades.

At 29, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu at birth is one of the biggest and most successful African artists. His breakthrough came via a 2012 release “Like to Party”, the chief single from his debut album L.I.F.E., selling 40,000 copies on the first day of release.

Burna Boy hails from a musical family. Benson Idonije his grandfather once managed Fela Kuti. Later, Bose Ogulu his mother became his manager. The musician studied media and communication in the UK.

Critics claim the album draws heavily from the music of Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Bob Marley. The album peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. 

While Burna boy classifies his music as Afro-fusion, blending Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae and R&B, Los Angeles Times, August Brown said, “savvy and modern but undistracted by obvious crossover moves.”

After inking with an agreement with Warner Music Group, his third studio album Outside catapulted him to stardom. In 2019, he clinched the Best International Act at the BET Awards. 

African Giant, released that same year, won Album of the Year at 2019 All African Music Awards and nominates for Best World Music Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

The Grammy is an award presented by the Recording Academy to recognise achievements in the music industry.

Twice as Tall was nominated for the same category. This achievement made him the first Nigerian with a consecutive nomination to the Grammys, winning the category. Burn Boy has previously collaborated with Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé among other notable international acts.

Burna Boy’s October 2018 at London’s O2 Academy Brixton was sold out. Destiny, his single was included in Joe Biden’s inauguration playlist in 2021. 

An avid Manchester United supporter, the rapper is known for his frank stance, with his feud with AKA well documented. Burna boy once mocked Nigerian youths in 2020, saying they deserved everything that was befalling them.

The songwriter’s love relationships have been dogged by controversy. A fling with Stefflon Don concluded in sorrow as marriage romours started circulating. By now, Jo Pearl was in the picture, claiming she was dating the singer since 2018.
