King Goodwill Zwelithini who has died aged, 72, leaving behind 6 wives and 28 children, was the longest-serving Zulu Kingdom monarch, with a reign spanning over five decades.

After his father’s passing in 1968, he was appointed to the throne, only aged 20 years as a student. King Zwelithini was only crowned in 1971, because he sought refuge in St. Helena for three years, after an assassination attempt.

This made him the eighth monarch of the Zulus.

Born in 1948, he was the eldest son of King Cyprian Bhekuzulu and his second wife Queen Thomo, the king has been hospitalised with diabetes. The royal family stated during his illness.

“On behalf of the Royal Family, we thank the nation for your continued prayers and support in this most difficult time.” On Friday, 12 March, he was pronounced dead.

The king was active in national politics, particularly during the 1990s apartheid era. Though his role was largely ceremonial, he was influential in South African political domestic affairs.

Among other titles, King Zwelithini was the head of the Ubukosi, the state recognised institution of Traditional Leadership that consists of local chiefs.

He also chaired the Ingonyama Trust tasked with administering the land traditionally owned by the king for the benefit of the Zulu nation.

Though traditional leaders are not consulted on policy formulation, ordinary citizens believe an Inkosi’s major role is a symbolism of community solidarity. However, other nations have ended the role of traditional leaders.

King Zwelithini revived cultural functions, including the Umhlanga, Ukweshwama, which involves the killing of a bull. The latter ignited an uproar from Animal Rights Africa in 2009.

For his efforts, he earned an honorary doctorate in agriculture from the University of Zululand. In 2012, the king angered some sections of the population after he called same-sex marriages “rotten”. His statements attracted a rebuke from many sections of the country.

Later in 2015, he raised anger after he accused foreigners of competing with locals for limited resources. Some associate his speech to have fuelled attacks unleashed on foreigners, resulting in three deaths.
