Relatives of Nyasha Mugwagwa, 38, a Zimbabwean who went missing after a raid by militant Islamists at the coastal town of Palma in Mozambique are appealing for his whereabouts.

Palma where he worked was raided by the militants on 24 March, resulting in dozens of civilians being killed and at least 11,000 people displaced after the invasion, including Nyasha who was employed in the hospitality industry.

Nyasha is “currently on the register of missing persons as a direct result of this conflict,” according to a flyer posted on social media. The concerned family has since launched an appeal for information and a hashtag #HelpBringNyashaHome has been initiated.

Among the foreign causalities were a South African and British national in what has been recorded as the biggest attacks by the militants in northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province since their insurgency in 2017. The militants, known locally as al-Shabab, have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group.

A picture shot between 24 and 27 March with a message asking for help was posted by BBC on the grounds of a hotel in Palma, where many locals and foreigners hid during the attack. After the attack, communication with the town, which has a population of about 75,000, remains cut.

Energy giant Total has been forced to suspend its multi-billion dollar natural gas project in Afungi, a short distance from the town.

Meanwhile, the Mozambique military says it has regained full control of the coastal town, a week after it was attacked. "The airfield area was the only one we needed to clear and we did that [on Sunday]. It's completely safe," Mozambique army spokesperson, Brig Vidigal was quoted by AFP news agency as saying.

Leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will discuss the insurgency at a meeting, amid fears that it could spread.

Palma is a town on the northeast coast of Mozambique's Cabo Delgado Province, sharing the border with Tanzania to the north and north-west. In 2010, the local economy was transformed by the discovery of gas in the nearby Indian Ocean, leading to a rapidly growing liquefied natural gas sector.
