The respected Zimbabwean telecoms mogul has been named amongst the World's 50 Greatest Leaders.

The complete list by the prestigious magazine has ranked the philanthropist at number 48, alongside influential world leaders.

“Masiyiwa’s entrepreneurship has had a major impact in Zimbabwe, his home nation, and on the African economy more generally,” noted the magazine.

“Econet, the telecommunications firm he launched in the 1990s, helped pioneer mobile loans and cashless payments on the continent, sparking a wave of adoption that has expanded economic well-being for millions of unbanked people in Africa—while also helping Masiyiwa become a billionaire.”

Now based in London, Masiyiwa is a also board member at Unilever and Netflix, among other big Western companies—helping each do business in Africa with local development needs in mind.

The magazine added that “But his most urgent current role is as the African Union’s special envoy in charge of acquiring the materials to fight COVID-19. Masiyiwa spearheaded the creation of the African Medical Supply Platform (AMSP)…”

“Masiyiwa recently said that the continent had secured long-term commitments for a total of 700 million doses, for nations with a total population of well over a billion—his leadership and global business ties are leveling the playing field.”

He also sits on the Africa Progress Panel as well as the boards of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and Rockefeller Foundation.

In 2020, he was named as a special representative to the African Union in charge of the COVID-19 response.

As a member of the African Union’s special envoy in charge of acquiring materials to fight Covid-19, he has helped procure 700 million vaccine doses.

Other notable names on the long list are Dr. Ching-Hon Pui and Malala Yousafzai. In paying tribute to the nominees, the magazine said, “Some were already extraordinary achievers in business, government, philanthropy, athletics, and the arts.”

“Others were ordinary citizens. In truly unprecedented times, each stepped up to make the world better, and inspired others to do the same.”
