Many successful people, that we admire today, did not only use their talents to achieve greatness.

Talent alone will not provide you with the success that you need. To achieve that, you need to go beyond your comfort zone, you need to put on some extra hours.

What you do every day in your daily routine is not hard work, but what you do after hours, the extra effort that put on beyond the normal schedule.

Hard work is what you do in the absence of your boss. Hard work is a process, it involves evaluation, the sacrifices you undertake, the pleasant moments you missed while others enjoyed themselves, while you were busy concentrating on your task.

The Michelangelo formula

The ability not to give up, while everyone else is criticizing you. Only then, can you achieve better results?

Michelangelo is celebrated for his extraordinary talent, but he admitted he was a hard worker. “If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.”

Like Michelangelo, many successful leaders are assumed to move up through the ranks based on their born talents and abilities when, in fact, they spent years learning and growing to get where they are today. The natural ability only gets you to a certain extent.

People hate work

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas A. Edison.

Life chances are always presented in unsavory things, their presentation is unattractive things, and many of us will loathe and despise them because we don't see any prospects. But for those willing to go the extra mile, tackle the impossible, they will reap the rewards.

Hard work is not meant to kill you, but it is often disguised as a challenge that many will miss because they are not willing to commit themselves to some dirt, tedious work.

Hard work is rewarded with more doors opening for you, sometimes it is not material benefit but the fulfillment to do more. “The reward for work done is the opportunity to do more,” said Jonas Salk.

Hard work defines people

Former Chicago White Sox, baseball player Samuel James Ewing says hard worker defines people. “Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and don’t turn up at all.”

This statement separates hard workers from pretenders. Some fold their hands and observe others while the daring are willing to do the hard, dirt work.

The last group are missing from action, and prefer to play it safe, and become observers from afar. Some will just look, and probably back off when the heat is turned on. In the end, they lose everything.

The formula to achieving goals

“Working hard and working smart sometimes can be two different things,” American author, Byron Dorgan wrote.

The formula to achieve your set goals starts with your planning, setting timelines, including short-term, and long-term goals. When you plan and follow it through, you can achieve more, with little effort.

For anything to be successful, and fulfilling, it must be motivated by the truth, and not cheating other people to achieve selfish gains, according to Grover Cleveland, “Honor lies in honest toil.”

Booker T. Washington agreed with Cleveland, that only the work of one’s hands should be gratifying and honored. “Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as a result of hard work.”

Filling the void

Work encouraged the late English theoretical physicist, cosmetologist, Stephen Hawking, and a reason to live. After he was paralyzed, he continued working, to show his love for his work.

Don’t work for the money but for a cause that will bring meaning into your life and transform other people. “Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it,” observed Hawking.

Work is a combination of action, and the will to get the required results. Your will to see change drives you into action to attain the desired results. Empty chat and idleness will not yield the required results, intimated Maya Angelou, saying, “Nothing will work unless you do.”

Dylan Thomas weighed in adding that, “He who seeks rest finds boredom. He who seeks work finds rest.”

Push towards your goal

“I’ve learned from experience that if you work harder at it, and apply more energy and time to it, and more consistency, you get a better result,” said Louis C. K. “It comes from the work.”

For someone who has won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album twice, Louis understands the rewards of hard work, because such a feat is only attained through hard work.

The formula for success

To explain clearly the meaning of hard work, Vince Lombardi uses the dictionary, saying, “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

In his quote, one can’t use shortcuts to achieve their goal, except the laid down process of doing the hard part first, and only then can success be achieved. The journey to greatness has a chronological, defined order, it is not a haphazard process.

If you love sleeping more than the hours you work, chances are high that you will become poor. There is no reward in sleeping unless you are guaranteed that it will reward you. So far, none has been rewarded for sleeping. “Don’t stay in bed, unless you can make money in bed,” warned George Buns.

Those living a stagnant life should heed George Lucas’s warning. “Working hard is very important. You're not going to get anywhere without working extremely hard.”

You are reflected by your work

“Every man’s work, whether it be literature, or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself,” Samuel Butler stated.

The effort you put into your profession and the results you achieve are a clear reflection of your character. If you are not successful, maybe you are not putting in the necessary hours and effort.

Extra hours in your work are a sign that you are willing to train your muscle, sharpening your skill to always be in contention when the time comes.

Don’t wait for motivation, always remember your goals and destination. “Careers, like rockets, don’t always take off on time,” said Gary Sinise. “The trick is to always keep the engine running.”

Strive for excellence

There are many hard work motivational quotes out there, but the one attributed to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stands out.

“Don’t just set out to do a good job,” the American activist said. “Set out to do such a good job that the living, the dead, or the unborn couldn’t do it any better.”

When you focus on achieving something, do it so well so that you become an expert, and you will influence generations to come.
