In the beginning, all you have is a vision on paper, nothing more and you burn the midnight oil to achieve it.

Your vision is what you want the rest of the world to believe in, and possibly convince investors to buy into your idea.

This reveals what you foresee for your company in the future, and what you want people to perceive you. Once written down, a vision becomes greater than a personality, it must overlap generations for your legacy to be acknowledged.

Your business vision drives your company’s decisions, the reason why your company was founded, and the cornerstone of your brand.

As the founder, you are bound to follow your business vision mission values, and objectives diligently, whip others into line, while formulating strategies to achieve it. Sticking to a laid down vision is what separates successful and failed companies.

The good, bad, and the ugly

In Jack Welch’s words, “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.”

The former business executive, Chairman, and CEO of General Electric clearly understood the demands of a leader in articulating a vision to his subordinates.

Even without the support of everyone else, leaders stay stubborn to the vision, inspiring others, even when the chips are down. Visionaries are creators, they understand their mission more than their followers, and only that way, can they convince others to follow it.

Vision first

“Failed plans should not be interpreted as a failed vision. Visions don’t change, they are only refined,” John C. Maxwell noted. “Plans rarely stay the same and are scrapped or adjusted as needed. Be stubborn about the vision, but flexible with your plan.”

Plans are not vision. While you are allowed to change your strategies to suit current trends and conditions, your vision remains the same as before.

For example, Coca-Cola’s vision statement declares, “Our vision is to craft the brands and choice of drinks the people love, to refresh them in body and spirit.”

And if you ask the billions, including you who have tasted a Coca-Cola brand, the company doesn't compromise on its original vision.

Along the way, the company has made mistakes, plenty, proposed or adjusted their original plans, but they have remained loyal to offer brands that are enjoyed globally, for the past 135 years.

Vision has no boundaries

The feat achieved by American astronaut and aeronautical engineer, Neil Armstrong, as the first person on the moon, reveals how to create a business vision.

Abroad a spacecraft, Gemini 8, he refused to be limited by his fears, and he elected to explore the impossible. He declined to limit his vision even faced by the intimidating situation.

“The important achievement of Apollo was demonstrating that humanity is not forever chained to this planet and our visions go rather further than that and opportunities are unlimited.”

Originality goes beyond dreams

“Creativity is generating ideas that are novel and useful. I define originals as people who go beyond dreaming up the ideas and take initiative to make their visions a reality.” – Adam Grant.

While Grant, an American author and phycologist respects dreamers, and creative people who pursue their new ideas to change humanity, he appreciates those who invest in resources, time to bring their vision to life, which has proven a problem to many dreamers and creators.

Writer Neil Gaiman trusts in being unique, telling your life story, and never be attempted to copy someone’s else vision or destiny. “The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.”

Refuse to be a statistic

The world is occupied by people who are confined in doing the ordinary, scared to explore beyond their comfort zone. In that way, they forget and abandon their life purpose, they are gratified in being counted among the rest.

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement,” Woodrow Wilson, the 28th United States President mentioned. “You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”

Vision is the way to greatness

“The path from dreams to success does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get on to it, and the perseverance to follow it.” – Kalpana Chawla.

Dreaming only without a clear vision is bound to fail. To reach your destiny, like Chawla, an American astronaut and the first woman of Indian origin to do to space, your vision must be specific. Courage and a fighting spirit are however a prerequisite.

Vision doesn’t exist in isolation

A clear vision is anchored by hard work to attain it. Also, all action without activating your vision will result in disappointments. If the two are combined, there will be great transformation, according to Joel A Baker.

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world,” Baker concluded.

Dreams and vision are identical twins

Napoleon Hill once said, “Cherish your visions and your dreams as they are the children of your soul, the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.”

A vision is a combination of various actions, and it will not be realized in isolation. You need to marry it with your dreams to yield the best results, that way, they become the core of your success.

Leadership and vision

On leadership and vision, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi beliefs it has to be contained in one’s belief and must be revealed through action.

“A leader will find it difficult to articulate a coherent vision unless it expresses his core values, his basic identity,” articulated the psychologist. “One must first embark on the formidable journey of self-discovery in order to create a vision with authentic soul.”

Great leaders are visionaries, they are adamant to fulfill it, despite the odds, Jack Walsh said. “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.”
