HARARE – Charlie Sheen, the celebrated Hollywood superstar who recently revealed his HIV status to the world, has been involved in AIDS activities since 1987.

Award Winner
According to online records, Sheen’s interest in AIDS was initially reported in 1987 with his support of Ryan White, an Indiana teenager who became a national spokesperson for AIDS awareness after being infected with AIDS through a blood transfusion for his hemophilia.

Since then, he has been a major donor and supporter of Aid For AIDS since 2006, Sheen was honored with an AFA Angel Award, one of only a few ever given, at the nonprofit's 25th Silver Anniversary Reception in 2009.

Actually, his support for health initiatives is testimonial.

In addition to his financial support, he has volunteered to act as a celebrity judge for several years for their annual fundraiser, Best In Drag Show, which raises around a quarter of a million dollars each year in Los Angeles for AIDS assistance.

Sheen's Admission

According to Sheen he was diagnosed at least four years back with HIV, a virus that spreads throughout the body – and has affected millions in Africa. He however doesn't know how he contracted HIV.

He finally revealed his status for two reasons. First, extortion led Sheen to pay out millions of dollars to close friends who knew of his diagnosis. The mega star used the money to keep his diagnosis private, but was growing weary of using his finances to conceal his secret.

Secondly, Sheen believed going public with his diagnosis would ‘help dispel the stigma of HIV.’ “I have a responsibility now to better myself and to help a lot of other people and hopefully with what we're doing today others will come forward. I will not shun away from responsibilities and opportunities that drive me to helping others.”

The former Two and A Half Men star, in 2011 took on a Twitter challenge by a grieving mother to help critically ill babies born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia by supporting, The Association of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Research, Awareness and Support.

Shoulder To Lean
For this, the star has sympathisers.

Natasha Vieira wrote on Sheen’s Facebook page: “I am heartbroken for the news you have received. But there are many things now to help this, and I pray that you are in good hands.

I am sorry for how this was leaked out when you did not want it to be, but sometimes underneath something this hard comes something better, and the truth no matter how hard is better to handle than not.”

She also added that true friends are vital and should be treasured. – The Aloe News/Online Sources
