Cape Town - A photograph of a humble potato has reportedly been sold for €1m, equivalent to almost R18m.

According to the Irish Times, the Irish photographer, Kevin Abosch, sold one of the three prints of his photograph to a European businessman who showed interest in purchasing it during a visit to the photographer’s Paris home.

The photograph sold for a non-negotiable €1m, making it Abosch’s largest sale on a single image.

“I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species.

Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted. I use the potato as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience,” said the photographer.

The photograph was taken in 2010, when a batch of organic vegetables was delivered to his home.

Abosch’s other work includes photographs of celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Malala Yousafzai and Steven Spielberg and a series of portraits of people from Ireland. - News 24
