Cape Town - South Africa President Jacob Zuma’s offer to repay for expenses incurred during the construction of his mammoth rural palace in Nkandla has been shot down by opposition parties.
The president, in papers filed with the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, proposed that the money used to build non-security upgrades at his Nkandla homestead be settled without going through the courts. He went on to suggest that he was willing to pay any amount determined by the auditor-general and the finance minister.

His allies at Cosatu hailed the move. The ANC said its support for the proposed solution didn’t imply that Zuma was responsible for wrongdoing.
“We still call for the prosecution of those responsible,” the ANC said.
But the DA, which has joined the EFF in the court battle, want Zuma in court.
DA leader Mmusi Maimane told journalists in a media briefing in Cape Town that they will proceed with their arguments in court on Tuesday.
Maimane said the case would clarify the powers of the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela.
The EFF would not comment before its media conference scheduled for today, but Malema tweeted: “We should all first agree that the remedial actions of the public protector are binding.”
Public Prosecutor, Thuli Madonsela |
Madonsela welcomed the proposal but said out of the respect of the court processes she wished not to respond publicly before having formally responded to the proposal.
By late afternoon, Madonsela was talking to her legal team about the Nkandla proposal.
Maimane said Zuma’s proposal was to save face as the court could rule against him just two days before he delivers his state of the nation address.
Political analyst Ralph Mathekga said Zuma’s move was the sign of a man who has run out of options.
“For him to come out now shows desperation,” he said. - Daily Sun
