Pietermaritzburg - The family of a 32-year-old woman are still disturbed on what had caused their three dogs to maul her to death at their home in Montrose, Pietermaritzburg in South Africa.

Mpho Palesa Mokoena was killed just before 11am by her two Rottweilers and a cross bull mastiff in Braithwaite Road. Police had to shoot the dogs to get into the backyard where they were standing guard around her.

She was already dead by then. Her sister, Mmabatho Brown, described Mokoena as a pillar of strength. “She was always calm. Nothing fazed her. She was strong and helped me get through my divorce,” she said lovingly.
Vicious Dogs Killed Their Owner

The mother of a 3-year-old son, lived with her parents. Having been a person with special needs, she stayed at home during the day. She went for a sewing course and used to sew from home. Brown said her sister was very attached to her child and their parents.

“Her child is in pre-school. I don’t know how we are going to explain to him what happened to his mommy.” Brown added that her parents were numb with shock. “They don’t know what happened. We all are trying to put the pieces together,” she said.

She added that her parents got the dogs in 2012, because of an increase in crime in the area. Mpho used to take care of them and feed them. “The dogs were her responsibility.”

Brown, who did not live with her family, said she last saw her sister about half an hour before she received a call about the incident. “She walked me to my car and hugged me when I left, which was a bit unusual.”

A police source said that neighbours had heard Mpho scream and saw the dogs attacking her. They shouted at them and threw things at the dogs to try to distract them. They even threw water to get them to break their hold on her.

A call was made to SA Can (a community action network) which told the paramedics and police of the incident. ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said that paramedics and an SAPS search and rescue team arrived at the home shortly before 11am.

“Emergency personnel were unable to approach the woman, as three dogs stood next to her body. Efforts were made to remove the dogs and to chase them away. Unfortunately, all the efforts proved unsuccessful and two of the three dogs had to be put down by the police. The third fled but was shot later by police.”

He said paramedics climbed over the fence and immediately assessed the woman. “She was declared dead on the scene. It is unknown what caused the dogs to attack.” - Online Sources
