Harare - A Harare woman’s dream to relocate to the United Kingdom was last week shattered after she was arrested for attempting to fly out of the country using her sister’s British passport at the Harare International Airport.

The con will also likely land her sister, now a British citizen into trouble with British authorities. Shumirai Mtetwa, 25, of Mandara was dragged to the courts and sentenced to 20 days in prison following her arrest at the Harare International Airport.

Mtetwa was however, given an option to pay $100 after pleading guilty to charges of contravening the Immigration Act. She appeared before magistrate Harare Tendai Mahwe. The passport was handed over to the British Embassy.

Prosecutor Francesca Mukumbiri told court that last Tuesday and at around 4pm Minerals and Boarder Control Unit detectives received a tip off that a Zimbabwean woman was using someone else’s passport to fly to UK.

Acting on the tip off detectives intercepted Mtetwa at the airport check point tendering the passport.
Detectives approached Mtetwa and asked her to produce her passport. She showed them British passport number GBR 510236440.

The police officers interrogated Mtetwa and she admitted that the passport belonged to her sister, Melody Mtetwa, who is in the UK. Shumirai’s personal details obtained at the Registrar General’s department were different from what was in the passport. - Online Sources
