Harare – Zimbabwe football team, the Warriors has been paired against three other African soccer giants with a rich footballing history for the 2017 Afcon tournament in Gabon.

Appearing at the soccer showcase for the third time, the Warriors has often struggled against their more athletic and agile North African counterparts.

Here, tinzwei.com we preview their opponents for the 2017 Afcon tournament.

Algeria

Algeria had made appearances at the World Cup in 1982, 1986, 2010 and recently in 2014 – and lifted the Afcon showpiece in 1990 as the hosts.

Algeria became the first African team to score four goals at the 2014 World Cup against South Korea.

Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt are its main rivalries – the recent being the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The two resumed their contention when Egypt downed Algeria in an Afcon match in Angola, the same year.

Tunisia
Christened the Carthage Eagles, Tunisia has appeared at four World Cups beginning in 1978 – but has failed to go past the first round.

After beating Mexico 3–1, they became the initial African team to win a World Cup match. Tunisia won the 2004 Afcon tourney as hosts.

Senegal
The Lions of Teranga caused a major upset in their sole appearance at the World Cup in 2002 by beating world and European champions France in the opening fixture.

Eventually, they reached the quarter finals joining Cameroon, and Ghana in that feat. Senegal’s best success in Afcon was in 2002 – losing to Cameroon on penalty shootout.

Zimbabwe
The Warriors have never qualified for the World Cup finals – and only participated for their initial Afcon in 2004. In their maiden appearance, Zimbabwe was paired against old rivalry Egypt.

“First of all we have to appreciate that all the 16 teams did not qualify by chance. They finished on top of their groups and it means we could only anticipate quality opposition, Warriors coach Callisto Pasuwa commented on the draw.

Zimbabwe need to shift a gear in their preparations to entertain hopes of advancing into the next round.

“We could be little boys in that group – but we have to make an impression at that stage. In terms of preparation I think we should do our best. Unfortunately, we have missed one of the dates for the FIFA international friendlies,” reasoned the gaffer. – Additional Reporting from Online Sources
