Friendly Ghost: 10 Things You Never Knew About Casper Nyovest

Refiloe Maele Phoolo, popularly known as Cassper Nyovest, has never been shy about his origins and the life experiences that moulded him into the resilient young man he is today.

In the wake of what has been dubbed the biggest achievement by a local artist, the success of his #FillUpTheDome campaign, many fans are keen to know who the man behind the catchy lyrics and killer dance moves is.

A quick internet search may reveal where he was born, who he is dating or even where he went to school, but here are ten things that will make a die-hard fan feel they know Nyovery a wee bit better.

Politically hooked up

He may very well be one very few things the ruling party and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) can agree on. Not quite the avid advocate for politics himself, Nyovest still manages to rally all behind him.

Before the president released a statement commending the artist, the EFF posted an image of its leadership at Saturdays event.

Album titles

His first album, Tsholofel, is named after his youngest sibling and the second, Refiloe, after himself. It would not be a far-fetched notion that his next albums may be named after his sister, Thuto, and late brother Khotso.

He named the album after his younger sister after she gave him the R50 he needed to take a taxi to Johannesburg where he knew he had a better shot of realising his dreams and he has never looked back.

Organic touch

Nyovest had close ties with slain businessman Wandile Bozwana, the business owner of energy drink brand Orgazma, who he says inspired him.The artist has been seen at many events promoting the brand in a not-so-discreet way. Popular radio DJ T-bo Touch has also been linked to the brand.

Outta Promosa

In his diss-track to hip-hop rival AKA, Cassper hollers that he is straight outta Promosa. Always loyal to his home province of the North West, its no wonder he mentions the small town in Potchefstroom, outside Ikageng township where he lived with his beloved grandmother.

Corporate never loved us

Cassper has been in some friction with some of the biggest names in South Africa. Earlier this year he took on Super Sport for using the slogan Slyza Tsotsi, from his track with twin DJ duo Major League. Before that he slammed Savanna, in their promotion of their dark alcoholic beverage. They used the phrase Dark dark, Shebeleza sound familiar?

Loyal man

His management team is made up of childhood friends, the likes of Carpo, who he has known for over a decade; and who stuck with him through his days of trying to break into the cut-throat industry. Cassper is known for his loyalty to friends and family, but even those don't come near the loyalty he has for his Creator. Raised in a staunch Christian home, he credits his success to his faith.

Whats in a name?

He wasnt always Cassper Nyovest. The young rapper started off as a Young Gun and adopted the Cassper Nyovest name when he started hanging with Motswakoguru, Hip Hop Pantsula. Those close to him have said there may be a link to his favourite childhood cartoon, Casper the Friendly Ghost. - Online Sources
