Premier Soccer League clubs received a massive boost from the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

And from next year, four top PSL clubs will be allowed to play in Caf’s premier competition, the Champions League, instead of the current two.

This was announced by SA Football Association president Danny Jordaan.

“Caf decided to increase the number of PSL teams competing in the Champions League to four. That is in recognition of how well our teams have done in recent Caf competitions and also in recognition of the PSL.
Victory for PSL Clubs

Along with Egypt, being the most professionally run league on the continent. Caf has noticed the positive attitude of PSL teams towards African competitions.”

Egypt is the only other country to have four teams competing in the 32-team Champions League. Jordaan said there was no change at this stage in the Caf Confederation Cup setup, where Mzansi has the allotted two teams competing.

Caf is holding a conference in Mzansi in September where all the changes to Caf competitions and club licensing will be discussed.

But the PSL can thank both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning African champions, for this windfall.

Bucs reached the Champions League final in 2013 and the final of the Confed Cup two years later, while the Brazilians won the Champions League last year and the Caf Super Cup in February. - Daily Sun
