Durban – Mamelodi Sundowns striker Leonardo Castro is set to join Kaizer Chiefs in January. Independent Media has been reliably informed that Castro is on his way to the Amakhosi.

Sundowns were ready to part ways with Castro in the recent transfer window, but he was registered by Masandawana on deadline day.

The 28-year-old Columbian has struggled to find a starting berth in the Sundowns side this season.

“Castro is on his way to Chiefs. It is a done deal. That’s why Pitso Mosimane is not playing him. They have agreed with Chiefs in principle,” a well-placed source stated.

He made his name during the famous time of “CBD” – which was made up of Castro, Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly.

Last season, Castro struggled with injuries, while he didn’t take part in the past pre-season as he was given a break to spend time with his family after his wife gave birth.

Sundowns spokesperson Thulani Thuswa made it clear that he is unaware of Castro’s possible transfer to Chiefs.

“I don’t know what you are talking about. Castro is still our player. I’m not too sure about the length of his contract with the team,” Thuswa said.

“He is not injured. The reason he has not featured is because the coach believes in other players who are doing the job for him at the moment.”

Chiefs have tried different options via trials upfront, but none of them have been successful.

Chiefs communications manager Vina Maphosa said: “I’m shocked. Who told you the story? I haven’t heard of such. This is news to me.

“I have to consult management to find out more about the story. I’ve been busy with the activations of the Soweto Derby.” Castro is set to partner with Venezuelan Gustavo Paez upfront. - News 24
