Harare – “The purpose is to show people we are proud of our ugly faces.”

These were the words uttered by Mr Ugly Pageant organiser in South Africa, David Ntshangase, adding that he was tired of contests that discriminated against ugly people.

Ugly carnivals, just like beauty lineups are gathering fame, especially in Africa, with Zimbabwe being the pioneer.

Recently, in South Africa, men had to parade their faces to the audience and a panel of three judges. The winner said he would spend his prize money shopping for new clothes for his seven kids and wife.

“I have a beautiful wife, Sibongile Bhozi. She encouraged me to enter the pageant because she knew I’d win. She couldn’t accompany me because of other commitments.”

He further said that he was proud of his ugly face.

“It is my gift from God,” he said.

The Zimbabwe version of Mr Ugly will take place in Harare, with the winner guaranteed of a bull.

“Our anchor sponsor has pledged a beast for the winner and am very sure the competition will be tight,” said David Machowa, founder and organiser.

The previous version held two years ago courted controversy, after the loser, William Masvinu mentioned that the winner was ‘too handsome’.

“You made him the winner simply because of missing teeth. But does that define ugliness? Do you want me to remove some of my teeth to reclaim my position?” Masvinu said then.

What kicked off as a local town contest in 2009 was turned into a national event in 2012.

And now, the winner of the 2017 edition will meet with winners from South Africa for the maiden Mr Ugly Africa.

Zimbabwe pioneered the competition, which celebrates "ugly men", and on November 25, 13 men will compete for the unique title.

"The winner must have something that goes beyond looks. A good character is one of the key elements we are looking for," said pageant organiser David Machowa.

Past Zimbabwean winners include a traditional healer, night club bouncer and a rank tout. - tinzwei.com/Online Sources
