Harare - Years back, I devotedly followed a weekly television programme entitled: Forgive and Forget produced in South Africa.

The bigger picture was to bring warring parties to a common thought, and seek for pardon. The concept involved a truck that housed the presenter and the perpetrator.

The duo would drive to the aggrieved person and break the news. If the wounded accepted the apology, the door would open and personally receive the apology. If the confession he/she did not accept, the van drove off.

Many missed the chance to make up because of pride. The series taught me a valuable lifetime lesson: it is not enough to forgive but forget when someone hates or hurts you.

The Journey
A while back, I had a confrontation with a relative. After the incident, we never spoke for years. It took me six years to confront my mistake and visit the aforementioned family member. It was not easy, but the deed brought a lot of relief in my life.
Forgive and Forget
Even some breakthroughs started to manifest.

The 600 km journey that I undertook was profitable. From that day, we revived our relationship. It never profits to lose everyone because of pride and self-centred thoughts. Had I allowed my pride to overtake my conscience, I could have lost even more.

According to my spiritual father, Apostle Pride Sibiya, an unswerving servant of God for the past two decades, ‘‘You cannot overcome the devil by bitterness but with love. Love disarms those who persecute you.

‘‘The devil is more equipped for hatred than you are. God’s solution is love. If you fail to live by the laws of the spirit you have failed in life.’’

I Need You, You Need me

He proceeds to caution, ‘‘Every evil is overcome by good. The law of love supersedes the Law of Moses and it encourages forgiveness. The power of love is more than hatred. If you let hatred grow it will cause you to seek revenge.

‘‘If someone angers you, a soft response will counter everything. Love covers a multitude of sins. If you don’t forgive, you allow the devil to control you.’’

Remember, I need you, you need me. So, everyone is vital in your life.

My marriage once stalled because of some alterations leading me to conclude that: ‘it was better being single’. Instead of finding solutions, I had uncaringly resolved to terminate my union, even over microscopic variances.

The Benefits

Forgiveness is good for your heart—literally. One study from the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found forgiveness to be associated with lower heart rate and blood pressure as well as stress relief. This can bring long-term health benefits to your heart and overall health.

Its is also associated with five measures of health: physical symptoms, medications used, sleep quality, fatigue, and somatic complaints.

It seems that the reduction in negative affect (depressive symptoms), strengthened spirituality, conflict management and stress relief one finds through forgiveness all have a significant impact on overall health.

In other words, forgiveness restores the relationship to its previous positive state. Forgiveness is good for your body, your relationships, and your place in the world.

That’s reason enough to convince virtually anyone to do the work of letting go of anger and working on forgiveness

Shinning Light
Luckily, I saw the light in time, and today I love my wife even more. Since we accepted Jesus as our personal saviour, our marriage is being blessed each day.

Yes, challenges will come, but we will overtake them through His grace.

As you recite this instalment, maybe you are burdened with hatred and vying for revenge. Probably, your spouse cheated on you, maybe your workplace is ‘hell’ or a relative angered you.

My message to you is: don’t wait to confess on your deathbed. Christmas is a time for giving. So, why not give love instead. Forgive and forget today. God is love! Hurt, hate, revenge is Satan’s colony.
