Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune is wary of Mamelodi Sundowns’ attacking threat, particularly four players the he mentioned could pause a threat, but he says they will have to be prepared to deal with that on Saturday.
“It’s going to be a tough game. I mean, there’s no question about that. Sundowns is on fire, they’re scoring left, right and centre.
“But I trust my players; I trust my defence. All we will require on the night is just a lot of communication,” said Khune.
Khune admits a tough test awaits for Chiefs against Downs’ attacking trident of Percy Tau, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Thema Zwane, but says they will all have to be up for it.
“Percy Tau is on form, and it’s not only him. They get goals from Sibusiso Vilakazi, Themba Zwane, so in our planning we’ll have to be specific in how we’re going to close them down.
“Because you know, as soon as they jump the centre-line, it’s music. And we’re going to have to dance to that music and make sure we defend well.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper also feels less perturbed by the threat of The Brazilians sniper Hlompho Kekana, who often hits crackers from range, and says he will have to be on top of his game to keep his opposing skipper at bay.
“It’s not a major concern. I think, at Chiefs, our weapon – I don’t know if I should say this because I’m going to be exposing a lot, but it’s just something we believe in – is that our first offender must be the first defender,” he added.
“So, whichever area a player loses the ball in he must be the first one to press, before the opponent picks up their heads and maybe pick out the pass.
“So far that’s worked very well. And I’m aware of Kekana’s long-range shots, I’ll just have to be on top of my game and I’ll have to mentally, physically and emotionally prepare myself.
"I’ll have to do my calculations right because I don’t want to be caught day-dreaming.”
