Besides music, Diamond Platinumz is a hardcore hustler.

In 2017, he considered cancelling a Nairobi show following the death of his wife’s ex-husband, Ivan Ssemwaga. The Ugandan tycoon had died in South Africa while receiving medical treatment, aged 40.

“It has been a tough week for our family and especially Zari but then I thought it would not be good to cancel my shows in Nairobi because this is something we had planned for a long time,” the famous Bongo Flava singer said then.

He added: “But then, from here I will be headed to Uganda to pay my last respects to Ivan.”

The show of compassion attracted positive comments from his multitude of fans. Ivan was buried in a flamboyant style at his Nakaliro village in Kayunga district. Zari and Diamond had children together after she divorced Ivan.

In Tanzania, Diamond is an icon, but he sweated to reach the top. “I don’t want to let my people down. I make sure that I work so hard at mostly creating different sounds,” he said.

Blessed with slick dancing styles, he is one of the most influential artists in Africa, overtaking other traditional names.

As of writing, he is ranked as the highest earning artist in Africa’s Great Lakes region at 31 years. Big brands in East Africa are queuing for him to endorse their brands and increase sales.

On 23 January 2019, Diamond Platnumz, was officially introduced as Pepsi Brand Ambassador in East Africa. Other bands, including Parimatch Africa, Nice One, and Coral Paints followed suit.

Diamond has been the face of politics. The ruling party recruited him in 2010, and he remixed his single “Mbagala” to garner support.

Hi move to endorse a candidate of his choice was labelled as bigotry. In America, musicians campaign for a particular candidate without much hassles.

The composer has popularised the Bongo Flava, a uniquely Tanzanian offering: romantic melodies with an urban beat influenced by traditional taarab music from the East African coast.

According to DJ Edu, Diamond is a workaholic. “Diamond Platnumz is very hardworking and has great showmanship,” says DJ Edu.

With 43 percent of Tanzania’s 55 million citizens having access to the internet, mainly via mobile phones, many can view his love songs via social media. On the world stage, Drake has garnered seven billion views on YouTube, while Beyoncé has more than 12 billion.

Diamond’s net worth is estimated at around $4 million, placing him amongst Africa’s wealthiest artists. Waah, his recent trendy song featuring Koffi Olomide attained 2 million views in 24 hours, earning him almost $6,000 via YouTube advertising.

Two months on, the song has garnered 40 million views on YouTube, where he has 10 million subscribers.
