Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala says the team continues to believe in coach Steve Komphela’s vision, and hopes to save his job with a trophy this season.

Amakhosi are still in the running for both the Absa Premiership, where they lay seven points adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and the Nedbank Cup, after advancing to the Last 16.

With the campaign now reaching its climax, pressure is mounting on Komphela, who has yet to deliver any silverware to the club as his three-year contract draws to a close.

However, Tshabalala defends that the team continues to move in the right direction, having built up a solid foundation with a mixture of youth and experience in the past two-and-a-half seasons.
In Support of Khompela

“We’re heading in the right direction with the squad that we have – a mixture of experience and a lot of youth,” said ‘Shabba’.

“There’s a bright future in the team, looking at the long-term, but what also matters is here and now, and the situation we’re currently facing – to win games and trophies.

“Hence I say, we’re not there yet and we are a work in progress, but we still have a chance to bring silverware through the Nedbank Cup and the league.”

The 33-year-old playmaker also feels the coach deserves to continue bringing his vision to life beyond the expiry of his contract in June, and hopes to aid his case by clinching one of the two remaining trophies on offer.

“With regards to the coach being here, I think he’s done well in terms of trying to bring the team together, and promoting and giving youngsters an opportunity,” he added.

“Sadly he will be judged on trophies but, us as a team, we see what he’s doing and his vision. So, it’s us who have to buy into that and turn the hard work that he’s put in into rewards, by winning the league or the Nedbank Cup.” - KickOff
