Spiritual Embargo: Station Bans ‘Prosperity Miracle’ Prophets

Harare – State-controlled Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation (ZBC), has applied brakes on ‘prosperity miracle’ prophets from airing their sermons and advertorial material, due to protests from listeners.

The transitory ban on such programmes comes after listeners accused ZBC of giving prominence to ‘miracle prophets’ at the expense of other trending issues.

However, the restriction could shrink the much-needed revenue for the broadcaster, with the now banned prophets having replaced traditional businesses as a cash cow to sustain the ailing station.

“What happened is we have temporarily suspended the programs to allow us to have a re-look considering the many complaints we have received from the public who are the owners of the radio stations since we are a public broadcaster,” ZBC acting head of radio services, Albert Chekayi said.
The Influx of 'Prophets' has Caused Concern in Zimbabwe

During the temporary pause, ZBC will review if they are not infringing on their faithful followers who pay a mandatory, yearly licences.

“This decision was taken by us. We are answerable to the listeners. Remember, a public broadcaster does not just target profits but the interests of those who pay licenses. Once the process is complete, it will inform us what steps to take,” Chekayi added.

Popular ZBC station, Star FM has been singled for being bombarded by an influx of prophet adverts and sermons in a bid to lure congregates. ZBC previously enjoyed a broadcasting monopoly, until recently when independent players entered the fray after the state freed the airwaves.

The influx of prophets, particularly in Africa has attracted the ire of some sections, with Rwanda recently banning churches that had allegedly invaded the nation, with capital only, accounting for 700 churches. – Online Sources
